Basic network infrastructure

DeiC offers high bandwidth network connectivity to universities and research institutions via the Research Network.

DeiC develops and operates the Research Network, which is a nationwide network infrastructure aimed at universities, research institutions, other public institutions and Danish companies with a significant research element. Colleges can also be connected to Forskningsnettet.

Forskningsnettet also connects to other national and international networks, linking the world with your desktop or lab equipment. You can use the research network both as an internet service provider and as a provider of closed connections.

Along with networking and internet connections, the basic package includes a number of elements that your institution can benefit from.

DeiC Research Network

DeiC Forskningsnet is the internet provider for universities and research institutions. The network is based on two central routers located in Ørestaden and Lyngby, and both of these routers are connected to corresponding routers from our network provider, NORDUnet.

More information
Who can get connected?

Universities, research institutions, University Colleges, Regions, other public institutions and Danish companies with a significant research element as well as colleges affiliated with a university can join the research network.

If you are not on the research network, your institution can of course join and become part of the community. You can also find forskningsnettet's agreement with the affiliated institutions about the level of service they can expect in a number of areas by reading our terms of affiliation.

Research Network as an internet service provider

The research network is the internet provider for universities and research institutions. The network is based on two central routers located in Ørestaden and Lyngby, and both of these routers are connected to corresponding routers from our network provider, NORDUnet.

Each university has a connection to each of the two central routers. The connections are routed differently across the country to ensure the best possible redundancy (see map).

At most universities, the research network has one or two additional so-called small mesh routers that are also redundantly connected to the central routers. From the small mesh routers, 'last mile' connections are then established to the institutions located in the surrounding area, and dormitories are typically connected to the small mesh routers. The last mile connections are typically not redundant.

Large institutions (especially universities) handle how traffic is distributed on the network themselves, using the routing protocol BGP.

But smaller institutions and especially colleges usually prefer the research network to act as their 'default gateway' - the front door to the Internet. Another model is for the research network to communicate with a local router or firewall at the institution.

The research network is based on a fiber infrastructure that covers a large part of the country. To increase the utilization of these fibers, CWDM or DWDM is used so that one fiber can transport up to 88 individual circuits.

Some of these are used for the research network's own internet delivery, but the rest are available to the connected institutions. This way of building the network ensures that the allocated capacity is always available and that the other quality parameters are close to ideal: Lowest possible delay, no packet loss, no jitter.

Research network in the rest of the world

NORDUnet handles the task of the research network's international traffic: to the other research networks (including GÉANT, Internet2, etc.) and international peering to the general internet.

The research network in Denmark connects to research networks in the rest of the world through a number of partners. It also offers a range of related services such as wireless networking and VPN connections.

Dedicated point-to-point connections

Many institutions have geographically separated locations. To connect these, the research network offers dedicated point-to-point connections, typically at the highest achievable quality, i.e. at the optical level, so that the institution itself can have, for example, an MPLS structure on top of this.

The research network focuses on the lowest possible delay, highest possible quality and virtually unlimited bandwidth. This type of connection can be established with failover protection via redundancy as desired by the institution.

Connections of this kind provide far more than the internet supply itself, which is typically only one or two connections for the entire institution.

These connections enable time-critical applications and consolidation of server infrastructure at fewer addresses, while also being used for things like replication between disk systems, CTS systems, alarm and more. Currently, institutions can choose between 1Gbps, 10Gbps and 100Gbps connections, and connections can be encrypted at the hardware level. Other needs can probably also be met. Contact us about it.

How to use DeiC services abroad

You don't need to be connected to the research network, because the services can actually be used anywhere in the world that is on the internet. Some services are free, but for most, your institution must at least be connected.

If you are affiliated with a Danish institution, but move around the world a lot, you can continue to use the services via the research network login service, WAYF, exactly as if you were in Denmark.

If you are not part of the teaching or research environment, but are involved in projects or research collaborations with an academic institution, they will typically be able to help provide access to the services you need.

Forskningsnettet is for those who are researchers, students or otherwise employed at one of the affiliated institutions.

Be part of the decision-making process

If you are a technician working with network infrastructure, the Net TekRef working group is an opportunity to learn, share experiences with others and have a direct impact on the research network. Through collaboration, we're getting better all the time. Find the NetTekRef description under "resources".

Traffic and load

There are many ways to describe the load on individual lines in a network. On the research network, load is measured by actively asking the routers for traffic figures for the different lines.

Traffic is measured on all backbone lines, international connections and the individual connected institutions.

All measurements are publicly available and updated continuously.

If a line is missing in the overview, please notify Jan Ferré so that the line can be added.

IPv6

IPv6 has been implemented on the research network's production network, so that IPv6 and IPv4 run side by side in the backbone and in the connections to NORDUnet.

A number of IPv6 peerings to other Danish ISPs have also been established through the DIX.

Institutions on the research network are initially allocated a pool of IPv6 addresses - a /48 (280 addresses). The preliminary allocation can be viewed at IPv6 Address Allocation. Questions about IPv6 can be directed to the research network's network operations - netdrift@deic.dk.

Useful addresses

Name service The research network offers name service on 2001:878:0:100::2 and on 2001:878:0:e000::53

NTP The research network offers NTP on 2001:878:0:100::2

IPv6 project

As early as 1998, the research network started IPv6 on the production network as the first research network worldwide. Since then, the research network has offered the connected institutions access to IPv6.

The Internet we know today is based on IPv4 (Internet Protocol). Due to the prospect of running out of addresses, a new protocol for handling addressing was developed in 1996. It is called IPv6 (IPv5 Internet Streaming Protocol never materialized). For some years now, there has been the prospect that new IPv4 addresses will no longer be available. This is a reality in the APNIC region (Asia/Australia), for example.

Connection to the State Salary System (SLS)

According to the Danish Government Payroll System (SLS), users who use the Danish Research Network to connect to Statens Lønsystem (SLS) do not need to run VPN, as is otherwise required when connecting from "foreign networks".
