DeiC speech-to-text offers you easy and secure conversion of speech to text in the form of subtitles inserted on your video, or as a transcribed version of your audio file.
By acquiring DeiC speech-to-text via DeiC, institutions within the Danish education and research environment can obtain favorable prices while data processing is done in a reassuring manner. DeiC speech-to-text service is based on the Whisper platform and data processing takes place in Lyngby and Amager. The Whisper platform is developed and supported by NORDUnet as a Nordic service. NORDUnet is a joint Nordic collaboration owned by the research networks in the Nordic region.
DeiC speech-to-text is relevant when you need to make your video or audio files available to a wider audience who may need access to e.g. subtitled audio for your video. In many cases, this will be necessary when the institution needs to ensure compliance with the mandatory Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), which is part of the EU Web Accessibility Directive "Accessibility of Public Websites and Mobile Applications". The directive came into force in the fall of 2018.

Who can use DeiC speech-to-text?
DeiC speech-to-text has been developed for use in many industries and for many usage scenarios. However, it has particular value in the research and education sector, which has a widespread need for transcription services.
The DeiC DeiC speech-to-text agreement is available to institutions using WAYF (Where Are You From, www.wayf.dk). The DeiC speech-to-text agreement is only available at the institutional level and is not available to individuals.
What does it take to use DeiC speech-to-text?
Access to DeiC speech-to-text requires your institution to sign a connection agreement for the service. DeiC speech-to-text can be used as a standalone service where your video or audio file is uploaded for transcription and made available to the user in transcribed form. DeiC speech-to-text is also available in versions that are integrated with e.g. video conferencing solutions, video editing solutions, learning management systems, etc. In these variants, the transcription is initiated as part of your workflow in your chosen solution via an API to DeiC speech-to-text.
What about legal, security and personal data?
Law: DeiC speech-to-text via DeiC is provided under the terms set forth in the Connection Agreement and the Data Processing Agreement. The Connection Agreement is available here and the Data Processing Agreement is available here.
Security: There are currently no specific IT security risks identified when using DeiC speech-to-text. If DeiC speech-to-text is used in a version that is integrated with existing IT solutions, an overall risk assessment of the solution may be relevant.
Data storage: DeiC speech-to-text offers the end user an individual document store that can be used to store media files before, during and after transcription. This part of the service is provided for practical reasons, but no guarantees are made for the availability of the media files.
Personal data: Personal data is processed within the EU/EEA. The DeiC speech-to-text agreement includes a standard data processing agreement between your institution and DeiC speech-to-text.
What does it cost to use DeiC speech-to-text?
DeiC speech-to-text is available as a standalone application offered via web interface, or as an API that can be integrated with your application. The pricing is similar for the two variants, but the cost of using the API from your existing application may already be covered by your current application and should be investigated.
Your institution will receive annual usage reporting and billing. The consumption is planned to be included in the consumption overviews on dashboard.deic.dk. Your institution will also be able to receive consumption reporting upon request and DeiC will continuously monitor the consumption at your institution.
