Tre skarpe til medlem af programkomiteen Guido Aben, Senior strategy officer, SUNET

What inspired you to join this year’s DeiC Conference committee, and what unique perspective do you hope to bring?
I'm with SUNET now and as part of the nordic vibes, it's an obvious honour and boon to be asked to help stir the Danish conference casserole with a bit of Swedish chef pizzazz, and learn a good deal about cooking in return! I've been with SUNET for about three years now but even before that time while working for other NRENs I've had excellent experience borrowing ideas from DeIC and before that, Forskningsnettet. The connections agreement system, early experiments in federations, and more recently the cs3mesh4eosc project. Some of my best friends work for DeIC, so, it feels good to finally be allowed to pay back a favour!
In your opinion, why should people attend this year’s DeiC Conference?
What struck me as an outsider is that DeiC actively involves member universities in setting the tone of the conference. While some nrens use their annual conference as their own platform to shine, DeiC wants the universities to feel like the conference is about them and I find that refreshing. The programme this year will very much be "with the time" but without veering so far into the acutely trendy that participants end up disassociating. Lots of newsworthy topics like sovereignty and geopolitical situation as well as hot topics from the European front including eosc, eurohpc and the data spaces.
Please share your personal top insider tip for a successful conference experience.
I tend to look for speakers you'd otherwise be unlikely to run into. Or topics that make you go "oh really"? The actual subject matter of your day-to-day work you're likely to already know about and be motivated to read up on, you don't really need talks. Talks are sales pitches, the way I look at them. Compact attempts at pitching a novel idea. Also, don't bring a laptop to a conference. Pay 100% attention. Talk to people. Work sent you there, work must have determined your attendance was important. Then treat it as important, too, and give it your full. Finally, I want to mention the "desert first" technique, that's a winner! People queue in weird ways - they prefer to join an obvious queue instead of looking for empty or lightly patronaged buffets!.
