EduVPN
EduVPN offers employees, researchers and students an easy and secure connection to the internet or to their protected systems at institutions.
EduVPN offers you easy and secure communication over potentially insecure networks. EduVPN acts as a bridge that gives you secure access to a network elsewhere.
EduVPN consists of both a product that secures an encrypted tunnel (VPN) between your PC, tablet or smartphone and a server located at your institution or research network. Today, eduVPN is deployed to over 250 universities as well as most European research networks and a few research networks outside Europe.
EduVPN is offered in two flavors. One is aimed at people in the research and education sector in general and offers access to the national research network. The other is institution-specific and is aimed at individual institutions, where eduVPN can offer VPN access to the institution's intranet.
Today, eduVPN is deployed in over 250 universities and 20 research networks.
When to use eduVPN
eduVPN is relevant when you're on a potentially insecure network. Here, you can connect to the internet without fear of your communication itself being compromised. For example, an eduVPN tunnel provides an extra layer of security when accessing a wireless network in a cafe, hotel, airport, or conference center. eduVPN gives you increased security against:
- Routing your communications
- Filtering out or redirecting parts of your communications.
In eduVPN's general variant, you gain access to the research network and the services available to your institution on the research network.
eduVPN in the institution-specific variant gives you access to your institution's internal systems in the same way as if you were physically sitting at the institution's address and using the internal network. You can access IT systems, send a document to print, and generally do what you normally do when you are physically located at your institution.
Who can use eduVPN?
eduVPN is designed for the global research and education world. In Denmark, anyone affiliated with an institution with an account on WAYF can use eduVPN. The use of eduVPN is done via DeiC's eduVPN outlet centrally on the research network.
Access to your institution's internal network requires that your institution implements the institution-specific variant of eduVPN.
