DeiC Speech-to-Text offers you easy and secure conversion of speech to text, either as subtitles embedded in your video or as a transcribed version of your audio file.
By subscribing to DeiC’s speech-to-text service through DeiC, institutions within the Danish education and research community can benefit from competitive pricing while ensuring that data processing is handled securely. The DeiC speech-to-text service is based on the Whisper platform, and data processing takes place in Lyngby and on Amager. The Whisper platform was developed by and is supported by NORDUnet as a Nordic service. NORDUnet is a joint Nordic collaboration owned by the research networks in the Nordic countries.
DeiC speech-to-text is useful when you need to make your video or audio files accessible to a broader audience that may require access to, for example, subtitled audio for their video. In many cases, this will be necessary when an institution needs to ensure compliance with the mandatory Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), which are part of the EU’s Web Accessibility Directive “Accessibility of Public Websites and Mobile Applications.” The directive entered into force in the fall of 2018.

Who can use DeiC's speech-to-text feature?
DeiC’s speech-to-text solution has been developed for use across many industries and in a wide range of scenarios. However, it is particularly valuable in the research and education sectors, where there is a widespread need for transcription services.
DeiC’s speech-to-text agreement is available to institutions that use WAYF (Where Are You From, www.wayf.dk). The DeiC speech-to-text agreement is available only at the institutional level and is not available to individuals.
What does it take to use DeiC's speech-to-text service?
Access to DeiC speech-to-text requires that your institution enter into a subscription agreement for the service. DeiC speech-to-text can be used as a standalone service, where your video or audio file is uploaded for transcription and made available to the user in transcribed form. DeiC Speech-to-Text is also available in versions that are integrated with, for example, video conferencing solutions, video editing solutions, learning management systems, etc. In these versions, transcription is initiated as part of your workflow in your chosen solution via an API to DeiC speech-to-text.
What about legal issues, security, and personal data?
Legal: DeiC speech-to-text via DeiC is made available in accordance with the terms specified in the Subscription Agreement and the Data Processing Agreement. The connection agreement and data processing agreement are available via the link in the upper right corner.
Security: At this time, no specific IT security risks have been identified associated with the use of DeiC speech-to-text. If DeiC Speech-to-Text is used in a version that is integrated with existing IT solutions, conducting a comprehensive risk assessment of the solution may be relevant.
Data Storage: DeiC Speech-to-Text offers the end user an individual document storage space that can be used to store media files before, during, and after transcription. This part of the service is provided for practical reasons, but no guarantees are made regarding the availability of the media files.
Personal Data: Personal data is processed within the EU/EEA. The DeiC Speech-to-Text agreement includes a standard data processing agreement between your institution and DeiC Speech-to-Text.
How much does it cost to use DeiC's speech-to-text service?
DeiC speech-to-text is available as a standalone application accessible via a web interface, or as an API that can be integrated with your application. Pricing is the same for both options, but the cost of using the API from your existing application may already be covered by your current subscription and should therefore be investigated.
Your institution will receive annual usage reports and invoices. Usage is scheduled to be included in the usage overviews on dashboard.deic.dk. Your institution will also be able to receive usage reports upon request, and DeiC will continuously monitor usage at your institution.

Get Help
Operational support for DeiC speech-to-text is provided by your institution’s IT department or by your local DeiC speech-to-text administrator. Operational information is provided through a subscription to ServiceInfo; general support for services is described on the DeiC Helpdesk. Specific support for the service is provided by the service manager.
